Interview with Artisan Kenichi Ishioka

2024.5.1

(Collaboration)

  1. How did you perceive the infusion of contemporary design elements through the collaboration with Ini Archibong?

I have a keen interest in contemporary design and was very excited to see how it could be expressed by adapting it to Tsugaru-Nuri lacquerware.

  1. Can you detail the innovations incorporated to accommodate the integration of contemporary design while preserving the authenticity of Tsugaru Nuri during this collaboration?

Tsugaru Nuri allows a wide range of expression through various patterning and color variations, but intricate shapes often pose challenges in the polishing process. Ini’s design took these challenges into consideration, which greatly facilitated the production.

  1. What aspects of Ini Archibong’s design philosophy or artistic approach posed the most intriguing or challenging aspects in their translation into the traditional craft of Tsugaru Nuri?

I was impressed by the idea of incorporating the electronic musical instrument “theremin” into traditional craft. My only concern was whether the lacquer would adhere firmly to the base material.

  1. In envisioning the future of Tsugaru Nuri, how do you foresee the impact of this collaboration in preserving tradition while embracing contemporary design?

I believe that it will be a great asset for Japan that the traditional techniques of Tsugaru Nuri will be showcased through this collaboration. Furthermore, I believe that it will help motivate artisans for their future creative endeavors.

  1. What is your take on Japan and personal or professional insights did you gain from participating in this collaboration?

“Made in Japan” is globally recognized as a symbol of trustworthiness. Through collaborations that blend Japanese tradition with contemporary design, including marketing efforts, I aspire to create an environment where Tsugaru Nuri can be appreciated worldwide.
