- How did you perceive the integration of contemporary design elements through the collaboration with Michael Young, and what specific challenges or opportunities did this present for the traditional craft of Nambu Tekki?
Crafts are essentially “tools” used in daily life, so as an artisan, I always designed from the perspective of “usage.” I believe our collaboration work has overturned such conventional thinking. Although Nambu Tekki has been designed from various perspectives before, the approach taken through our collaboration definitely comes from a totally new standpoint.
- Can you elaborate on the adaptations or innovations made to accommodate the integration of modern design while upholding the authenticity of Nambu Tekki during this collaboration?
To produce our collaboration piece, a relatively modern mass production technique was utilized rather than traditional methods. It falls into the category of “machine-assisted mass production” rather than “handmade”. The design was very innovative, but it presented no issues in terms of producing within the contemporary technology of Nambu Tekki.
- What aspects of Michael Young’s design philosophy or creative approach were most intriguing or challenging to incorporate into the traditional craft of Nambu Tekki?
When designing a product, I naturally tend to think in terms of individual items. However, the collaboration piece was very innovative in the way identical shapes were stacked to create a single form. Also, integrating the “Sakura” (Cherry blossom) patterns that are also used in our iron kettles, the essence of Nambu Tekki emerges in unexpected places that cannot be imagined from the form of the artwork. I was impressed to realize there were such methods of expression. When I first saw the design sketch, I struggled to imagine it, but now I realize that it was born from a perspective I didn’t have.
- In envisioning the future of Nambu Tekki, how do you anticipate the impact of this collaboration in preserving tradition while embracing contemporary design?
I believe this collaboration will help Nambu Tekki gain recognition worldwide, making people aware of its potential and leading to the creation of new items.
- What personal or professional insights did you gain from participating in this collaboration, and how has it influenced your perspective on the future evolution of Nambu-tekki craftsmanship?
Traditional crafts from the six prefectures in Tohoku are something I can recommend with confidence. This project, where each collaboration is progressing simultaneously, is truly wonderful. I imagine it will become a powerful force when all works come together. By showcasing crafts from an unprecedented perspective, I hope it will be an opportunity for many people to learn about and become interested in them. Our environment surrounding craftsmanship is suffering from a shortage of artisans, even though there are people who want to design and sell. I hope that showcasing technologies that can realize what people may think of will inspire them to get involved in the production.
