[Founder’s message]
I am pleased to announce the Craft x Tech Tokai Project exhibition.
Since its inception in Tohoku, this project has evolved as an attempt to reframe Japanese crafts as a form of contemporary creative practice, through collaborations between regional craft communities and internationally active creators. Throughout this process, we have come to recognise the importance of viewing craft not as a fixed “tradition,” but as a dynamic practice—one that has continuously evolved in response to the conditions of its time.
As we engaged with the Tokai Project, this perspective gradually took shape as a concept: Craft as Response. Notably, this idea did not originate from myself, but emerged organically from within our team. Craft, in its essence, has been shaped through the continuous act of selection by its makers—what to accept, what to transform, and what to preserve—in response to the ever-changing conditions of nature, technology, society, and economy. In this sense, craft can be understood as an ongoing form of response to the world.
The Tokai region represents a unique intersection where traditional craftsmanship and the processes of industrial modernisation have long coexisted and intertwined. Engaging with the accumulated knowledge of making in this region was not merely an act of referencing materials or techniques, but an inquiry into the historical and societal conditions from which they emerged. The dialogue between participating creators and local artisans extended beyond collaboration; it became a process of intersecting contemporary perspectives with deeply rooted contexts, generating new forms of response.
Through these evolving responses, Craft x Tech seeks to reposition Japanese craft—not as a legacy of the past, but as an open field of thought and practice directed towards the future. This exhibition represents both a reflection of where we stand today and a point of departure for new questions yet to unfold.
We warmly invite you to experience this endeavour firsthand.
