CRAFT X TECH ANNOUNCES COLLABORATING CREATORS FOR ITS 2ND EDITION ‘CRAFT X TECH TOKAI PROJECT’

[Tokyo, Japan – 1st October, 2024] – Craft x Tech, an initiative that bridges Japanese traditional crafts with modern ideas and technologies to create unique works of art, aims to foster new demand, promote talent exchange, and support Japan’s craft industries. The project, led by Hideki Yoshimoto, founder of the design studio Tangent, and curated by Milan-based independent curator Maria Cristina Didero, proudly announces the launch of its 2nd edition, ‘Craft x Tech Tokai Project.’

Following its successful inaugural edition Craft x Tech Tohoku Project 2024, collaborating with six districts from the Tohoku region in Japan along with six international creators, the 2nd edition will continue its mission with a new lineup of esteemed creators from around the world:


David Caon: Sydney-based industrial designer, founded his multi-disciplinary design firm Caon Design Office in 2009 and co-founded furniture and lighting studio, Laker.  His work has been exhibited in Milan, London and Singapore and is known for award winning aircraft interiors for QANTAS.

Eugene Kangawa / EUGENE STUDIO: Contemporary artist renowned for his paintings and large-scale installations, he is the youngest ever to hold a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. A permanent collection museum dedicated to his work is planned to open in Bali in 2026.

Lanzavecchia + Wai: This Italian-Singaporean studio, founded by Francesca Lanzavecchia and Hunn Wai, is known for their intelligent, inquisitive and thought-provoking body of work. It includes collaborations with Hermès, Vacheron Constantin, and Zanotta, and has garnered accolades like the Red Dot Award.

Philippe Malouin: A British-Canadian designer, founded his studio in 2008 and is acclaimed for his innovative furniture and installations. He has collaborated with brands such as Flos and Iittala and was named ‘Designer of the Year’ by Wallpaper* Magazine.

Atang Tshikare: South African designer, known for blending contemporary art with cultural roots, exploring the intersection of art and design. His work has been exhibited globally, including at the New York Metropolitan Museum, Brooklyn Museum and Design Miami/Basel.

Bethan Laura Wood: A London-based designer and Royal College of Art graduate, known for her vibrant, material-focused work and collaborations. She has worked with Dior and Perrier-Jouët, and her designs have been acquired for the permanent collections of  museums V&A , SFMOMA and NGV.


Further updates on the project, including the selection of new collaborating districts and crafts from the Tokai region in central Japan, will be announced soon. These forthcoming collaborations will continue to integrate traditional craftsmanship with pioneering design, and the outcomes will be showcased both in Japan and internationally.
